The 1913 D&SL Steam Crane has Arrived! Our 1913 Denver & Salt Lake steam crane is here! We had to move the crane via 4 39’ track panels-pulling crane and boom car into position onto the museum grounds. This took an even bigger crane from Terry’s Crane in Salida to pick up our 255,000 lb. crane and turn it 90 degrees putting the crane on the panels so we could pull them with equipment - leap frogging the panels as we covered the 368 ft. to the museum. Call Dave Naples, museum director at 970-509-9894 if you have any questions or want to help.
MTH built an O scale model of the 1913 D&SL Steam Crane/Rio Grande crane that is available to the public to purchase through our museum. For a limited time, the model crane can be purchased online at the price of $105 plus shipping, for a total of $126. Click here to order the model 1913 D&SL Steam Crane today!
Visitor Center Gift Shop in the Works The original Wedding Chapel from Heritage Square built in the 1920's is being renovated as the new museum Visitor Center Gift Shop. We are hoping to have it open soon. The new Visitor Center Gift Shop will eventually display the Model Railroad Display.
Historic Depot to Become the Official Museum Building
The museum has a great opportunity to save the historic Great Western Depot from Loveland, built in 1901. With the help of many great volunteers and local businesses, this building will be carefully taken apart, transported to Granby, and rebuilt as the official Moffat Road Railroad Museum. The Depot will feature a visitor center, gift shop, and small display area. With this new focus, the museum can continue to enhance the Interpretive Center with new and existing projects.
Work Days at the Interpretive Center The Moffat Road Railroad Museum is working on the equipment restoration for the Interpretive Center. The museum currently has four pieces of railroad equipment located at the Railroad Interpretive Park next to the Kaibab Park ball fields in Granby, Colorado. The Moffat Road Railroad Museum Interpretive Center includes a 1905 Passenger Car, which was transported from Rhode Island. The 1915 era railroad hand-cart shed from Hot Sulphur Springs was saved from demolition to become part of the Interpretive Center. There is also a 1923 all wood, red UP caboose from Nebraska, which was the first piece of railroad equipment for the museum. The newest piece of equipment is a 1913 Denver & Salt Lake steam crane, which was used in the early 1900’s to handle train wrecks in Grand County. Restoration projects are underway, so if anyone is interested in helping with any of the projects, they should contact Dave Naples 970-509-9894. We need all the help we can get!!
Museum Location
The museum is located next to Kaibab Park, near the bridge at the southern entrance to Granby. Kaibab Park features two softball fields, one baseball field, a kids fishing pond with handicapped access, picnic shelter with four tables, a playground, and walking trail to the Fraser River. There is currently a Railroad Interpretive Center, complete with outdoor life size displays of steam engine, caboose, and railroad artifacts and equipment. Still in progess is the official museum building, which will be setup inside the historic Depot from Loveland. It is a place where history, art, education, community involvement and pride can all come together.
We are currently in need of a laptop for the museum and are looking for someone who can donate one. The museum is also looking for artifacts to display permanently or for a limited time exhibition. For specific needs and to help, please contact Dave Naples at 970-509-9894 or email info@moffatroadrailroadmuseum.org and see how you can contribute to the project today.
