Moffat Road History - Maps

The Moffat Tunnel was completed in 1928 and is shown on the map detail of "The Hill" above by the dotted lines between South Boulder Creek and Winter Park. The Moffat Tunnel is 6.2 miles long - the third longest in the country, cutting under the Continental Divide. Today, trains entering and emerging from the West Portal of the Moffat Tunnel can be seen at Winter Park Resort, and passengers traveling through the area on Amtrak get to experience traveling through the historic Moffat Tunnel.

The Moffat Road Railroad was originally planned to go all the way from Utah Junction (Denver) to Salt Lake City, but when David Moffat died and the financing evaporated, the line ended up terminating in Craig, Colorado.
